Well, it is a case of tightly-packed formations, one consisting of what are essentially spearmen and the other consisting of shock infantry, that are somewhat mobile.

Not really. You also have to realize that because of the slow speed and therefore low amount of force, the chance of getting impaled on a spear is unlikely - that's why spears such as the Greek Sarissa (which was historically 4.5m in length) were so deadly to cavalry, but not very effective to infantry.

A friend of mine who plays Rome: Total War pointed out that there was a sort of "Rock, Paper, Scissors" between three particular units - Legionnaires, Berzerkers and Spartan Hoplites. I can't exactly recall which order it was in though.
